Osseous SurgeryFort Myers, FL
Osseous Surgery is a gum disease treatment that periodontists use to treat moderate to severe periodontitis. The goal of Osseous Surgery is to reduce the pockets around your teeth to keep plaque and bacteria from hiding there.
Gum disease destroys the bone and tissues that support your teeth. If gum disease is left untreated, it can lead to oral health issues like gum recession and tooth loss. It can also have a negative impact on overall health that contributes to conditions like heart disease, diabetes and stroke.
At Periodontal & Implant Specialists, we offer periodontal treatment for patients with or at risk of developing periodontal disease. Our team can help stop the disease or infection from spreading further and causing any oral health complications. We may also perform treatments to counteract any damage that has already been done. Is Osseous Surgery Necessary?
Osseous Surgery is only necessary when gum disease is too advanced for nonsurgical treatments. That is why early detection is so important to avoid more bone and tissue loss around your teeth. The best way to avoid osseous surgery is to practice consistent oral hygiene including brushing twice a day, flossing once daily and visiting the dentist regularly for exams and cleanings.
Do your gums grow back after Osseous Surgery?
Unfortunately, no. Once periodontal disease destroys the gum tissue, gum graft surgery is the only way to get it back. This helps to add thickness and volume to areas of gum recession. You won’t necessarily need a gum graft but if your gums recede and expose the teeth roots, this procedure can help restore oral health.
How painful is Osseous Surgery?
You can expect some degree of soreness after surgery but shouldn’t have severe pain or discomfort that keeps you up at night. Let your periodontal specialist know if you develop pain that does not get better with medication, they ask you to take.
Benefits of Osseous Surgery

Is Osseous Surgery the same as Deep Cleaning?
No, osseous surgery differs from deep cleaning referred to as tooth scaling and root planing. Deep dental cleaning treats mild to moderate gum disease which is similar to a routine dental cleaning but reaches deeper beneath your gums. Periodontists reserve osseous surgery for people with moderate to severe gum disease.
